UK’s luxury car hotspots revealed, and they’re not where you’d think

Think of luxury cars and images of sports stars, internet celebrities and Middle Eastern royalty posing around Knightsbridge spring instantly to mind. But Britain’s love for all thing luxury spreads much further than that, as new research shows.

While the London set might be happy to drop a couple of million on the latest hypercars, beyond the capital there’s a huge market for high-end used cars, with buyers still handing over six-figure sums for prestige models.

According to a study of the best-selling used luxury cars, Harrogate is Britain’s luxury car capital, with more of the UK’s most popular £70,000+ models bought there than anywhere else.

Of the 20 top-selling used luxury cars as ranked by car data specialists Cazana, six are most frequently bought in the North Yorkshire spa town.

It seems residents there aren’t phased by dropping £150,000 – that’s half the average property price – on a Ferrari 458 or close to £100,000 on a top-spec Range Rover Sport. You’re also more likely to see a used Range Rover Sport SVR, Audi R8 and Porsche 911 Turbo S there than anywhere else.

The Range Rover Autobiography is Britain’s biggest-selling used luxury car

Close on Harrogate’s heels comes Canterbury with three of the top 20 sellers. There, the average paid for a second-hand luxury car is £80,000 – that’s three times the national average wage – and the most popular models include the Range Rover Sport and BMW i8.

The list of best-sellers is dominated by models from Range Rover with petrol and diesel versions of its full-size and Sport models in the top five spots but more exotic models such as the Ferrari California and Bentley Continental GT also make it into the top ten.

The most expensive cars to insure

Tom Wood, CEO of Cazana, commented: “Used car sales represent a significant proportion of the luxury car market and offer a more affordable way to get into a high-quality luxury vehicle.

“We’re seeing car ownership change overall, with consumers realising pre-owned doesn’t have to mean significant loss of quality and more finance options available on used vehicles. In fact, for the luxury car market, used cars are a great way of living the Monaco lifestyle on a British budget.”
