In classic Greek, Koleos means Sheath. So what’s inside?
The UK is about to get an SUV which some of the rest of the world has had for over a year now. So what have we missed? It’s another take on the ever-popular SUV market, with the Koleos based on the same platform as the company’s Kadjar model. Renault has done quite well with the Captur and Kadjar, so it’s hoping there is room for one more at the top.
The Koleos certainly looks sleek and contemporary, although those attractive lines have meant there will be no seven-seater option, as offered by some of the competition. Those lines also offer really quite good approach and departure angles, so this Renault does look like it will be able to back up those SUV looks off-road.

The all-wheel drive model should help that further, keeping you moving on more than just wet roads. With ground clearance of 210mm, this may not be a Land Rover Discovery, but it will go further off-road than some other SUVs.
The power source is diesel, in this case a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder, with a reasonable 172bhp and an exceedingly reasonable 280lb/ft of torque from 2,000rpm. On the move there is a touch of lag when accelerating from low down, but from then on the unit pulls smoothly and quietly, with more than enough grunt to haul a laden version along the motorways.
You might find that a better experience than swinging down B-roads as, despite the fairly firm ride, the handling does allow a fair amount of body roll. You won’t enjoy rapid changes of direction but, overall, you get a stable and predictable ride, particularly if you stick with the smaller 18-inch wheels.
Inside there is a spacious and light cabin with a smattering of decent materials and a goodly amount of equipment. The UK is going to get Dynamique S Nav and Paris Initiale versions, with the former offering the best value since it includes panoramic sunroof, seven-inch touchscreen, sat nav, and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The higher spec does add more kit but the price rises notably and you get the larger 19-inch wheels which do nothing for ride comfort.
Whichever trim, the cabin has plenty of room for five with good legroom in the rear and a sensible, if not class-leading, boot.
So this is a perfectly decent addition to the ever-more crowded SUV sector. It’s unlikely to hit the markets like the company’s Captur or Kadjar, if only because it doesn’t really stand out in any particular way. Sure, it might offer a bit more off-road ability than some, and it looks good, but it’s hard to see those as deal clinchers when the competition is so fierce.
