You know you’ve got a couple of decent cars on test when even hardened road testers can’t stop themselves grinning whenever they (the cars, we mean) hit their daft powerbands.

In this case of this video, the two cars we’re testing are battling hard for the title of ‘ultimate hot hatch’. The first is the all-new and generally all-wonderful Honda Civic Type R. Its rival here is the Ford Focus RS. Not just any old Focus RS, mind you: this is the Mountune version, as breathed on by Henry’s Ford’s favourite tuning company. It churns out a healthy 375bhp.

But it’s not just the power that’s impressive in the Ford. It’s the torque. It has nearly as much as a V8 Mustang, and that’s a lot.

We confined ourselves to ordinary roads for this part of the test, having already been battering around the track, where the Honda performed amazingly. The Ford might do better here, but it’s still up against the most rounded Type R ever, a Honda that is less expensive and less heavy on fuel than the Ford, and a bit nicer cabin-wise.

But the Ford has all that ooomph. This is going to be close.
