Northumberland is home to some of the UK’s most magnificent castles, so here is a list of the top 15 in the county as rated by TripAdvisor visitors.
13. Belsay Castle
Belsay Castle stands in the ground of Belsay Hall. The now ruined 14th-century castle was built as a refuge at a time of Anglo-Scottish warfare but it was also designed to impress. Belsay Hall and Castle's interior spaces will open on Monday, May 17, in line with government guidelines. Advance booking is now essential. 14. Norham Castle
Norham Castle was one of the most important strongholds in the turbulent border region. It was besieged at least 13 times by the Scots, once for nearly a year by Robert Bruce. But it fell to James IV's heavy cannon in 1513 shortly before his defeat at Flodden Field. It is open daily from August and access is free. 15. Etal Castle
The 14th-century Etal Castle is set in the Ford and Etal estates. It was built by Robert Manners as a defence against Scots raiders and fell to James IV's invading Scots army in 1513, just before his catastrophic defeat at nearby Flodden. Etal Castle will open on Wednesday, May 19, but due to unforeseeable circumstances the exhibition, shop and visitor center will be closed.
