A Northumberland comedy club has scooped first prize in a leading national comedy competition.
Punch-Drunk Comedy Club, based at Newsham Side Club in Blyth, has bagged Best Large Venue for the entire North of England in the 2015 Chortle Awards.

Gavin Humphries, of Punch-Drunk Comedy, said: “This award is really a reflection on our incredible community here in Blyth.
“We’ve already witnessed it with the recent Blyth Spartans cup-run and we’re seeing it again with the Punch-Drunk movement – these are proud people and if you give them something to be proud of they will united behind it.
“The audience are the key factor in the success of this venture, so to all that have supported us so far, this award is yours and we congratulate you.”
Gavin added: “We’re planning on developing our flagship Blyth event into something of a carnival.
“We already have the carnival atmosphere and we’re going to oblige by bringing the carnival to town.
“We will continue to re-invest in the event has heavily as possible and we have some tantalizing development plans in store for our fans.
“We have now officially put Blyth on the map as the comedy fortress of the north of England – and the reality is that we are only just getting warmed up.”
Piggy-backing on the success of Punch-Drunk’s stand-up shows in Blyth, the comedy club has now expanded into North Shields, with a show at Percy Main Cricket Club on Thursday, March 19.
Upcoming shows include Andrew Stanley, Mark Nelson, Philberto, and Kai Humphries, at Newsham Side Club, Blyth, on April 20; Tom Stage, Gavin Webster, David Hadingham and Kai Humphries at Newsham Side Club on May 18.
