£20,000 appeal launched for church repairs

An appeal has been launched to raise funds to carry out essential repairs to a church tower in the county.

St Cuthbert’s, the parish church in Bedlington, is hoping to raise £20,000 to undertake repairs to the 19th century tower which dominates the centre of the town.

A survey carried out earlier this year identified that urgent works were required to the Castellation’s at the top, the tracery around the windows, the lead roof as well as areas of pointing.

The launch coincided with a ‘Mile of Pennies’ event held in the church on Saturday, when an image of the tower was in-filled with copper and small silver coins.

Applications have also been made to funding trusts and it is hoped that it will be possible to start work in September.

The appeal has already received £405 from a sponsored walk, and a £500 donation from Bedlingtonshire Chamber of Trade.

It has now launched a sponsor a stone initiative, where people are invited to sponsor a stone for £20, in return the donor can register a dedication to a loved one, an event in their lives or a special occasion and this dedication will remain on permanent display in the church.
