A frontbench Labour role for county MP

Ian Lavery has expressed his delight following his shadow cabinet office appointment.

The MP for Wansbeck will take up the position of shadow minister for trade unions and civil society. The Labour politician is part of the new team led by Jeremy Corbyn.

The former president of the National Union of Mineworkers is a trustee of the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation in the North East area, Northumberland Aged Mineworkers’ Homes Association, Hirst Welfare Centre and Woodhorn Museum.

He is also a patron of the Wansbeck Disability Forum and the south east Northumberland branch of the brain injury charity Headway.

Mr Lavery said on his website: “I am absolutely delighted to have been asked to serve on the frontbench in a brand new position that is extremely close to my heart.

“It will build upon existing relationships and develop many more. This is a chance to work with the trade unions to enhance the engagement of their members in politics and support the link between them and the Labour leadership.

“It is also an opportunity to work to promote the Labour Party’s engagement with wider civil society and the participation of community organisations in politics.”
