A NEW room has been opened at Wansbeck General Hospital to provide extra comfort for families at distressing times.
The addition to the accident and emergency department provides a comfortable and quiet area for relatives waiting for news of loved ones being treated.
It includes sofas and facilities to have a drink away from the main waiting room, and clinical areas.
Dr Jackie Gregson, consultant in A&E at the hospital, said: “Attending A&E can be a very traumatic time for families and it is often a shock for people to find themselves in a busy hospital A&E department waiting to hear what is happening with their loved ones.
“The new relatives’ room provides a much needed space for families away from the hustle and bustle of A&E.
“Previously there was no dedicated area where clinicians could talk privately to relatives but this new room means we now have an appropriate place to talk to people at what can be very distressing times in their lives.”
The improvements are part of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s investment in services, with the hospital dealing with 80,000 attendees a year.
