Academy gets pupils ready for sixth form

STUDENTS have been hearing how joining a sixth form could put them on a path to a rewarding future.

Young people and their parents from across Blyth and the surrounding area visited Bede Academy to find out more about its new sixth form, which opens in September 2012.

After hearing about the courses available, facilities, exclusive opportunities and finance, they were able to talk to subject teachers at an exhibition.

Bede Academy principal Gwyneth Evans said: “We believe that sixth form is the best years of your life.

“You only take the subjects you are really interested in and that are tailored towards your gifts, talents and abilities.

“Your eye is on the longer term goal and taking that next step into sixth form will prepare you for university, higher education or employment.”

Students currently studying for GCSEs heard the facilities for the form group will include a dedicated sixth form centre with IT suite, study room, careers room and common room with catering facilities.

In addition, students will be able to access the academy’s state of the art sport, music, drama and engineering facilities.

Miss Evans added: “Our facilities provide an outstanding environment but more than that it is about the dedicated and well qualified people who will support our sixth formers in making decisions about which courses to take and then throughout their time studying those subjects.

“Class sizes will be small and every student will have a tutor to guide and support them on their academic performance and in career and university choices later on.

“Tutors will have high aspirations because we want every student to thrive and be the best they can.”

Students will be able to choose from academic A-level subjects, vocational BTEC or OCR qualifications, or a combination.

In addition to their subject lessons, they will have independent study time, study skill sessions, a choice of PE, community action, sports leadership or Young Enterprise and have a chance to hear lectures from outside speakers.

Head of sixth form Paul Smith said: “Giving back to the community is an important part of our mission to help our students become well rounded individuals.

“We are as much about character as we are academic excellence.”
