A football coach who has helped nurture local talent is now taking his skills to a national level.

Andy Blight, director of sport at Northumberland CE Academy in Ashington and formerly with the Morpeth School Sports Partnership, has been appointed manager of the England Schoolboy U18 team.

Andy started his teaching career in 1999 and has managed school teams, progressing to managing Northumberland county teams.

Andy, a UEFA A licenced coach, has also coached youngsters at Middlesbrough and Newcastle United football clubs.

He said: “There are many people I’d like to thank for their support in helping me to get to this position and Northumberland CE Academy.”

Andy added: “I have based so much of my coaching philosophy around treating players with respect and facilitating development.

“In my experience, players need to feel cared for and nurtured, whatever their talent, experience or age. Hopefully, more coaches’ are sharing the responsibility for learning and development with the player.”
