Ashby takes latest Winter Series event at Blyth Running Club
Blyth Running Club recently held the penultimate race in their Winter Series of five handicap races around a 2.5-mile course on the Riverside Trading Estate.
On what seemed a perfect night for running, cool with very little wind, just under 50 lined up at the start.
First and second places went to two first-timers, with Michael Ashby winning by 31 seconds from Robert Sharratt with Alison Warnes in third a further 44 seconds adrift.
With one race left, Andrew Grieves leads the table on 41pts, with David McGarry second on 48 and Claire Mason on 49, there is then a bit of a gap to Tony Holland in fourth on 70pts.
Fastest finisher on the night, and also recording the fastest time of this season’s series so far, was Jake Masterman with a time of 13:23. Rachelle Falloon was fastest lady with 16:05.
The runners thanked the marshals and timekeepers who stood in the cold and wet and ensured that the event went off smoothly.
Blyth Running Club is always on the lookout for new members.
Club secretary Ralph Dickinson said: “We have a variety of sessions available from the complete beginner up to seasoned runners.
“Joining a club like this keeps you fit, you get to socialise and run with friends, which is great.
“We want people of all abilities to come along and join us.”
On Sunday, April 3, the club will be holding the Spirit of the Staithes 10-kilometre run.
The race will start at Blyth Quayside at 10am and all finishers will receive a T-shirt.
Walkers and cyclists using the beach path should be aware that the runners will be on the path from about 10.10am, but hopefully they will not be too inconvenienced.
With over 500 finishers last year, the club have had to introduce a limit to the number of entries and this is 600.
