In front of a good crowd, the visitors - top of the A2 division - were in trouble as early as the third over with the score on four when Mo Ali’s attempt at a paddle sweep shot backfired as the ball looped up with wicketkeeper Daniel Grant gobbling up the catch.

David Howarth struck a six but with the total on 20, Liam Clarke had his leg stump uprooted by Ben Harmison then Howarth lofted Ani Singh with Callum Storey safely pocketing the catch at long on.

Paul Rutherford accounted for Akhtar with the ball rebounding off his pads to break the wicket and also on 31, M Clarke went in identical fashion to Howarth. McClymont found Singh at point from the last ball of the 11th as Ryton slumped to 38-6 but Lady Luck was not on their side as Rutherford finger tipped a shot from Perry onto the stumps to leave non striker Jordan O’Neill stranded out of his ground.

A direct throw from Ben O’Brien ran out Perry at 55-8 then Harmison returned from the pavilion end to bowl S Clarke. With the score on 57 and from the last ball of the 18th over, Chris Robb was pocketed by O’Brien at point to polish off the innings.

For the hosts, Singh and Harmison took identical figures of 3-16.

Ryton gave a good account of themselves with the ball and made Ashington work hard for runs.

Indeed through Akhtar, they also made a couple of early incisions as the right armer bowled Neil Wood then trapped Singh lbw at a shaky 12-2.

Akhtar claimed his third victim, bowling Jack Jessop with the fourth ball of the tenth over before Ben O’Brien led Ashington home with an unbeaten 30.

The vice captain - skipper in the absence of Greg Williams - struck three boundaries off Ali, the latter which clinched victory with seven overs to spare.
