A ‘Schwop Shop’ is being held to help raise money for Cancer Research in memory of a friend.
Blyth-based insurance broker Weir Insurance is holding the event on Saturday, November 23, in memory of friend and former colleague Pauline Heron.
The styling event, ‘From Despair to Flair’, will take place at Weir Insurance and be hosted by stylist Jenny B.
Coffee and cupcakes will be served while attendees swap their ineffectual items of clothing with others to revive their wardrobes.
Weir Insurance managing director Karen Weir said: “All that’s required is a willingness to have a laugh and perhaps ‘bag’ a winter bargain in the name of a great cause.
“One of the reasons we wanted to do a ‘schwop’ event is that money is always tight before Christmas – but as Jenny B will confirm, women are still spending an average of £500 per year on items that they never use or wear so what better way to recycle.”
Jenny B will advise guests on their ‘schwop’ choices from the selection of handbags, winter coats and party dresses, and give a style talk as refreshments are served.
A raffle will also be drawn where the star prize is a style consultation with Jenny.
Karen added: “We were all very close to Pauline, who worked as our accounts clerk from 1998 to when she retired in October 2011.
“She worked through her cancer treatment with us part time and stayed in touch after retirement. Sadly, she passed away in September 2013 from secondary cancer.
“We are hoping to raise £1,000 for Cancer Research over the year to make one large donation before the year is out.
“It’s the first time we’ve done something like this but we’ll certainly hold other similar shopping events if it’s a success.”
