Ben proves his mettle with bronze medal

A young apprentice proved his mettle in the ring after picking up a medal at a boxing championships.

Ben Rees, a workshop apprentice at Cramlington-based HTL, won the bronze medal at the coveted EUBC European Youth Championships.

Ben, along with the rest of England’s Youth Men’s team, headed to Russia for the championships against other international boxing teams.

While Ben won the bronze, his fellow England team member Harris Akbar return with a silver medal after a tough final against a solid Russian opponent.

Ben, 17, said: “I went to Russia confident and fighting fit.

“I feel I boxed well in all three of my fights and I came home proud with a bronze medal.

“The World Championships are upcoming in November and I will strive to bring back yet another medal from that competition.

“I would like to thank HTL for their ongoing support and sponsorship.”

Ben will be part of the England Youth Men’s team travelling to St Petersburg, Russia, in November to compete in the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships.
