Big attendance at town's festive event
Newbiggin-by-the-Sea welcomed two special guests for the Winter Wonderland and Christmas tree lights switch-on celebration on Saturday.
John Bowe, who plays Lawrence White in Emmerdale, pressed the button to light up the tree and the faces of the many residents who came along.
He was in town to support the evening event at the Bank House Club in aid of the Chennai Six, which includes Nick Dunn, and their families, but kindly agreed to do the honours before going on stage.
In addition, Santa was in residence in his grotto – giving out free selection boxes to the children who visited him.
Other attractions included the ice rink and the snow globe, which was the ideal setting for the Christmas 2017 photo for lots of people, and there was live music from the Newbiggin Community Steel Band and Jamb.
Local crafters and Businesses set up in the church hall, with a range of items suitable for presents and Christmas goodies.
All of the activities and stalls were organised by Newbiggin Traders’ Association, which spends the year providing events for local residents.
The traders enjoy working with the town and county councils and Freeholders to encourage visitors to the area it describes as the village.
Association chairman Enid Wilson said she was delighted with the turnout for the celebration on Saturday.
She added: “Newbiggin is the hidden jewel in the Northumberland crown. It’s a bit like Marmite – you love it or hate it, but we’ve found more people loving it in recent years.
“There has been a big influx of new people to the village and we’re in the fortunate position of having many unique shops here as we still boast a butcher, a wet fish shop and a baker, not the case in many places now.
“We don’t have a candle stick maker, but do have a hat maker in Elaine’s Hats.”
