A man from Cramlington is growing an enormous beard to raise money for a charity close to his heart.
Steven Fawkes is growing his beard for a full year, in a bid to raise vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support after he had a troublesome experience with one of his close friends who was affected by cancer.
Steven said: “The idea behind the beard growth came from a rather troubling experience I had a number of years back when my friend lost all her hair through cancer.
“I had popped in to her house to help move a sofa bed down the stairs. As we took the sofa into the lounge I saw her standing there with no hair.
“I tried to disguise my surprise; however we both knew I was devastated. My friend is much better now and with treatment getting better and stronger with every day.”
Macmillan’s Sarah Goldie, said: “Macmillan must increase its support for people affected by cancer as we can only reach one in three people who need our help.
“All of the money raised will go towards helping us maintain and develop services in the local area.”
