Emergency services and lifeboat crews were called out to Whitley Bay this afternoon after a body was found.
At 1.06pm this afternoon, Humber Coastguard paged the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade along with Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team after receiving a report of a body on rocks approximately 200 metres north of St. Mary’s Island.
A spokesman for the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade said: "Brigade members worked with their colleagues from Blyth to secure and preserve the area whilst officers from Northumbria Police prepared the male casualty for extraction.
"The man was then carried off the rocks by brigade members using one of our stretchers. The local Coastguard Rescue Service senior coastal operations officer was also in attendance at this incident.
"The brigade wishes to express its deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased."
