A youngster from the county is looking forward to a summer holiday on the coast just nine months after undergoing heart surgery.
Chloe Beaney, from Cramlington, was seriously ill with cardiomyopathy, and was top of the Freeman Hospital’s transplant list.
A UK-wide appeal was made for a heart donor, and she underwent surgery in November 2014.
She said: “Before I felt tired all the time and sick and really breathless.
“(Now) I feel like I can join in with everyone now, it’s a lot better than feeling like you’re going to be left out and left behind.”
Chloe was diagnosed with leukaemia when she was just two years old, and treated with chemotherapy which brought on cardiomyopathy when she was 12.
She returned to school earlier this year but will go back full time next year to sit her GCSEs, and hopes to one day become a nurse caring for children going through similar situations.
“I would really like to be a nurse on the children’s intensive care unit so if someone is going through what I was going through i could comfort them as I know what’s happening,” she said.
