OPTING to take a year out from her studies for a first-hand look at the business world has helped a Cramlington student land her first graduate job.
Rachel Harland, from Blyth, undertook a year-long placement with regional accountants and business advisors Bell Tindle Williamson (BTW) whilst studying for an Accountancy degree at Northumbria University.
The firm were so impressed with her work that they kept her on for a further three months during the summer after the official placement finished – and having recently graduated with first class honours, Rachel has taken up a full-time role with the North Shields-based practice.
She’s now working towards passing her ACA exams and achieving Chartered status with the support of her employers, and is gaining experience in different aspects of the profession by working alongside senior colleagues across a number of the practice’s clients.
Rachel Harland says: “Undertaking a year out in business wasn’t a compulsory part of my course, and I was the only one in my year that decided to go down this path, but I’m extremely pleased that I did.
“Choosing a local practice like Bell Tindle Williamson for my placement gave me the chance to get closely involved with the work they do for clients, to integrate properly into their team and to learn a lot about the profession I wanted to follow.
“I didn’t really know what working in practice would be like, and it was very different to the work I’d been undertaking for my degree, but it gave me a good view of how the industry operated and reaffirmed my enthusiasm for the career path I’d chosen.”
Bell Tindle Williamson is a 35-strong accountancy firm which provides the complete range of tax, audit and accounting services to companies right across the north east.
It works with clients of all sizes, from sole traders and partnerships up to £15m businesses, and is especially strong in the SME, charity and owner-manager business sectors.
Keith Williamson, partner at BTW, adds: “Rachel made a very positive impression during her first year with us, and was clearly the right type of committed, high quality graduate recruit that we look to bring into the firm.
“We’d discussed the option of her joining us full-time once she completed her studies, and we’re very pleased that she’s now fully part of the team.”
