A lifeboat from Newbiggin RNLI recovered a man from the sea near Sandy Bay Holiday Park yesterday evening.
The call from HM Coastguard was made at 7.30pm and once the man was on board the lifeboat, he was taken to the beach.
He was then in the care of the Newbiggin and Blyth Coastguard Rescue Teams and Northumbria Police and the lifeboat returned to station.
A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said it received a call at 7.50pm and an ambulance arrived at the area the man had been taken to five minutes later.
It then transported the patient to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital near Cramlington.
