Elderly residents have called for help in trying to find alternative premises for their local Post Office.
Residents in New Hartley have been left shocked after being told their village’s Post Office branch in St Michael’s Avenue will close on June 15.
Villagers are hoping a new base can be found otherwise face a near 50-minute round trip to the nearest branch in Seaton Delaval.
Trevor Brown, of Hastings Gardens, said: “The Post Office is a viable proposition.
“There is a lot of older people in the village who use it regularly, both for its services and collecting their pension.
“This decision has been made by the owner of the building who is looking to sell it, so is closing the Post Office.”
The 69-year-old added: “We want to know if it could be re-sited in the village or maybe a portable cabin. I thought it might be able to move into the social club but don’t know if that is viable.”
A Post Office spokesman said: “We can confirm that the premises housing New Hartley Post Office will be withdrawn for Post Office use on June 15.
“We are working hard to find a permanent location for the Post Office and we hope to be able to provide further information on a proposed new location soon.
“We know how important Post Office services are to people and we are committed to maintaining services in the area.”
