A car passenger has sustained serious injuries after the vehicle hit a lamp-post in Newbiggin.

At 8.47pm yesterday, police received a report of a collision involving a Ford Focus travelling eastbound on the A197 – Woodhorn Lane near to the junction with West View.

For reasons yet to be established it collided with a lamp-post near to the junction, which resulted in a 19-year-old male passenger suffering serious head injuries.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said he remains in the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries.

The driver, an 18-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink/drugs and on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He is detained in custody, helping police with their inquiries.

The road was closed in both directions for approximately two hours to allow for a collision investigation to take place.

Inquiries are on-going and anyone who was in the area around the time it happened, or who witnessed the collision, are asked to call police on 101 – quoting reference number 1024 of 07/05/17 – with any information.
