New charges will be imposed to dispose of household DIY waste.
Northumberland County Council will introduce fees next week for disposal of items such as rubble, soil and plasterboard at its household waste recovery centres.
The authority says it is “under unprecedented pressure” to save money, and introducing the charges will avoid other service cuts.
Consultation with users of the waste centres found that almost half would prefer small fees for some DIY waste rather than for facilities to have reduced hours or be closed altogether.
There will be a £2 charge per bag or sheet for soil, rubble and plasterboard; £12 for a car load; £20 for a small trailer, estate car or small van load; £40 for a larger trailer and £80 for a transit van load.
There is no charge for garden waste and other DIY items such as bathroom suites.
