Runners who missed out on a place in the Great North Run ballot are being offered places to run in aid of a local charity.
St Oswald’s Hospice, based in Gosforth, is reminding those that were unlucky in the Great North Run Ballot that they still have places up for grabs.
Supporters can receive a guaranteed place for the Great North Run with the charity, for a £50 registration fee and the aim to raise £300 sponsorship to help St Oswald’s care for North East adults, young people and children with life-limiting conditions.
Last year, over 350 people ran for St Oswald’s, raising over £130,000, and the local Hospice are promising it’s 2016 team will receive lots of support both leading up to the event and on the day itself. The hospice celebrates their 30th anniversary this year, so are planning a party atmosphere at the charity village on the day of the run.
A team of St Oswald’s staff and volunteers will man their tent in the charity village, where weary runners finishing the race will be treated to massage treatments and yoga exercises to relax their aching muscles, as well as much needed refreshments. Runners will also receive a monthly email with training and nutrition tips to support their preparation.
New for 2016 is the St Oswald’s Team Challenge, where teams of 4 or more friends, colleagues or family members are invited pit themselves against others groups to be in with the chance of winning 4 prize categories, including best fancy dress and fastest combined time.
St Oswald’s Fundraiser, Helen Alderson finished: “We pride ourselves on a hero’s welcome for all our runners back to the tent, as we really appreciate the hard work and effort they put into the training and fundraising in the run up to the event, as well as them impressive feat of running 13.1 miles.
“If anyone is looking for a charity to run for this year, we would love to have help us celebrate 30 years of care by running with us. The Great North Run is a key fundraising event for us and helps us reach or target £7million each year, to keep the Hospice free for the local adults, young people and children who use our services.”
