Charity scoops award for work

A charity that operates a community facility in Northumberland has won a top award.

Ashington-based Real Deal Plus, received the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Community Group Award at the Newcastle Building Society’s Cornerstone of the Community Awards.

The award was given to the charity in recognition of it making a positive difference to the community.

Real Deal Plus director Kath Falcus said: “Winning this award is a great encouragement to ourselves and the many volunteers and supporters who give countless hours of their time to enable us to provide a vast range of services each week.

“We are making a real difference to hundreds of lives in the local community.

“Our 14 projects and services support both homeless and vulnerable people as well as those coming from long-term care by offering a warm environment where they can obtain free hot drinks/soup, companionship and support six days per week as well as a healthy home-cooked meal every Friday for a nominal amount.”

The charity is currently in the process of refurbishing two of the old cells to provide warm, comfortable day bed-sitting rooms where street sleepers can come and have a few hours of undisturbed sleep and much-needed privacy.

Kath added: “Donations of food, clothing and furniture are always welcomed.”
