Church will mark 50th anniversary

I WAS 14-years-old when I moved to Cowpen with my parents and began attending St Benedict’s Church.

At that time the church was a dual purpose building with a screen to partition the altar off at social occasions.

Due to the vision of its priests and the hard work of church members, the church has seen many changes since then.

Notable were the addition of a parish centre and creation of a community garden.

St Benedict’s is 50-years-old this year – how time flies.

Please celebrate this occasion by joining us for the three major events we are holding.

Firstly, our Patronal Festival will take place on Monday, July 11, at 7pm.

Secondly, ‘The Anniversary of Dedication’ is on Thursday, July 21, when we will have a Festal Mass at 7pm with guest preacher, the Bishop of Newcastle.

Thirdly, as part of our celebrations we are holding an Anniversary Concert on Friday, July 22, at 7pm, with the Backworth Male Voice Choir and guest soloist performing.

Tickets, costing £7 each that include a light buffet, can be obtained through Ann McDougall on (01670) 735036.

We are also planning a display of photographs featuring St Benedict’s over the past 50 years.

If anyone has any photographs they can let us borrow, we will be very grateful.
