They will be joined by others from North Tyneside to take part in the coastal recovery walk between North Shields and Blyth, which aims to raise awareness of addiction recovery and the support available. It will also be an opportunity for like-minded people and their families to get together and share their experiences, challenge the stigma often associated with substance misuse and highlight the real-life success stories from Northumberland and North Tyneside.

Coun Susan Dungworth, cabinet member for adult care and public health at Northumberland County Council, said: "The coastal walk is to celebrate the achievements of people who have overcome addiction and to inspire others who are striving to do the same. The walk itself is symbolic of the journey towards recovery, but it's also just a social occasion where people can get together and share their experiences. Substance misuse is complex and often misunderstood and people who are struggling deserve our full support."

Northumberland Recover Partnership is made up of Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, Changing Lives and Turning Point. A similar partnership runs in North Tyneside.

Clair O’Connor, from the partnership, said: "Our recovery community in Northumberland is growing every day and we are delighted to walk together to show that recovery is possible and very much achievable. We encourage the community to give us a wave if you see us on our challenge and please do get in touch if you or your loved ones would like some support."

The walk will set off from Oaktrees in North Shields at 10am, on Friday, and will arrive later that day at Oaktrees in Blyth. Anybody keen to take part in the walk, or in need of support, should contact Northumberland Recovery Partnership’s 24-hour helpline on 01670 396 303.
