Community initiative is given boost

A charity set up to help fund community initiatives in south east Northumberland has handed out more cash to a worthy organisation.

The Vantage Fund, launched by Wansbeck Centre for Voluntary Service (WCVS) in memory of community campaigner Sheila McGuckin, has recently awarded a grant to Northumberland YMCA for £464.97 towards the cost of purchasing new café equipment for the youth lounge and community café in the YMCA building.

Northumberland YMCA provides a number of projects and activities to young people from in and around the town of Ashington, as well as providing the local community a hub to meet.

Rob Cox, chief executive of Northumberland YMCA, said: “The grant will help us improve the community space and enable us to have a more fit for purpose café dining area.

“This in turn will enable us to potentially raise additional funds for the organisation and help us be more sufficient in the longer term.”

Anne Lyall, chief executive of Wansbeck CVS, who administers the Vantage Fund grant, said: “We are always delighted to be able to support organisations and groups to grow, particularly in this difficult financial environment.”

The fund is still open for applications, and more information is available at
