Competition is on for keen gardeners

A popular garden competition is to take place in the county once again this year.

The Ashington Gardens Competition, which is being supported by the local Shades of Green Garden Centre, is open to all Ashington residents.

Town council chairman Ely Turnbull said: “Following the success of the competition in recent years, there was a unanimous decision that it should go ahead this year as a way of recognising and rewarding the excellent gardening work undertaken by residents in the town.”

Town clerk Mike Slaughter added: “Since the town council reintroduced the competition in 2010, it seems to have generated a real interest within the community to maintain and enhance the environment and outlook in the town.”

There are six categories for entrants – small garden; large garden; disabled person’s garden; senior citizen’s garden; allotment garden; and public house and Commercial property.

Entries must arrive by the closing date of Friday, June 19, and judging will take place during July. Application forms are available from Shades of Green Garden Centre, on North Seaton Industrial Estate, by calling (01670) 624520 or by visiting
