A council leader who was recently under scrutiny for calling his ward a “dump”, has regained his seat in the elections.
Northumberland County Council leader Jeff Reid, kept his Plessey seat by 71 votes.
The LibDem member’s wife Penny, however, was beaten to the post for the Wensleydale seat by Eileen Cartie.
In March Coun Reid was quoted as saying: “I live in Blyth and Blyth is a dump. I usually get in the car and go to Cramlington to shop.”
He apologised for the comment, and told the News Post Leader: “We’ve got the elections in May, I guess people will be able to pass judgement then.
“In five years of being leader of the council I haven’t made many stupid mistakes. I’m not going to resign.”
The count is still ongoing for other wards in the county.
