A MAJOR refurbishment of a playground in Cramlington has been completed.
The £40,000 scheme in Chichester Avenue, Nelson Village, was funded by the town council and is the first of a refurbishment programme aimed at modernising the town’s playgrounds.
Coun Barrie Crowther said: “When the town council took over playgrounds two years ago it was clear they had suffered from years of neglect and under funding.
“Consequently many of the playgrounds were simply not used and repair and maintenance costs were a constant headache.
The new facilities will provide first rate play facilities and significantly reduce our maintenance bill.”
Town councillors Ian Ayres and David Vaughan worked with residents to design the new playground.
Coun Ayres thanked local people for their involvement, adding: “The consultation process gave parents and children the opportunity to decide what type of playground they wanted and I’m sure that everyone is pleased with what has been provided.
“For too long Cramlington has had to make do with second best but we are determined to make sure we have some of the best facilities in the county.
“The playground programme is just the first step.”
Over the next six months playgrounds at Margorie Street, Eastfields, Nelson Avenue, Norwich Way and East Hartford will be refurbished.
Residents will be invited to comment on proposals before they are finalised.
