They are worried that if the issues at Wellhead Terrace are not dealt with properly, someone could be badly hurt.

Members of Northumberland County Council’s local services team have been to the site and made some repairs, but people in the area believe they need to go much further to solve the problem.

Linda Walker, who lives at Wellhead Court, said residents have no choice but to drive their cars along the road to access their properties.

She added: “The number of potholes makes this a very dangerous road and someone will get seriously hurt unless something meaningful is done.

“We’re raising our concerns in public because I was told that there are currently no plans to make the necessary repairs.

“Since then, council workers have been out to fill in one of the worst potholes, but it’s got to the stage now that the whole road needs to be improved as one big job.

“When it rains, it’s like a big swimming pool because there’s nowhere for the water to run.”

Alan Chesterson, who lives nearby, is disabled. He said that, as well as the damage to cars, he and others have suffered damage to their wheelchairs.

He said: “Lorries need to use Wellhead Terrace so they can make deliveries to the Bakers Pantry shop and every time a lorry goes along the road, its condition gets worse.

“One of the drivers has even told me that this is the worst road for potholes in the area.

“Cars need to park here because there are yellow lines and a zebra crossing on the main road (High Market).

“If there are some heavy rain showers, afterwards you can’t tell where the potholes are located.”

A spokeswoman for the county council said that an inspector visited the road last week and made arrangements for some immediate repairs to be made.

She added: “The local services team has said that Wellhead Terrace in Ashington has been identified as needing improvement and options for the area are currently being explored.

“We know how vital our road network is in Northumberland and we are committed to doing all that we can to keep them in the best condition possible.”
