The final countdown is now on to the opening of a new purpose-built specialist emergency care hospital in south east Northumberland.
At 6am on Tuesday, June 16, Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington, will open its doors to the public and start treating patients from across Northumberland and North Tyneside who are seriously ill or injured.
This is the culmination of many years’ work led by our cliniciansDr Chris Biggin, clinical director for emergency care for Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
At the same time, changes will take place in emergency care at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s general hospitals in Hexham, North Tyneside and Wansbeck which will become 24-hour walk-in services providing urgent care for less serious conditions.
The opening of the new Northumbria hospital heralds a new era in emergency care at the trust which is at the forefront of the NHS with emergency care consultants on site 24/7. Consultants in a broad range of conditions will also offer services seven days a week, speeding up specialist care for patients to help save more lives and maximise chances of survival and a good recovery for more patients.
Dr Chris Biggin, clinical director for emergency care for Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “With only a few days left before our new Northumbria hospital opens its doors, it is really important that people know what the changes mean to them and their family.
“We have worked really hard to make sure we spread our message far and wide and people know about our new hospital and the introduction of 24-hour walk-in services providing urgent care at our general hospitals.
“This is the culmination of many years’ work led by our clinicians and as 16 June draws ever closer, we continue to remind people of the changes set to take place as we look forward to our new model of emergency care coming into force.”
A new public bus service which will help people to access Northumberland’s new hospital dedicated to emergency care starts this week, ahead of the facility opening, from Cramlington town centre to the hospital.
The C1 service will operate between Cramlington railway station, Manor Walks shops and the hospital’s main entrance every half an hour on weekdays.
