County pair are on national happy list

An inspirational couple from Northumberland have made it onto a national list of special people who make others happy.

Al and Paula Coates, from Cramlington, were both nominated to appear on the Independent on Sunday’s ‘Happy List’.

They appear on the list of 100 people from across the country who give something back and help others.

Adoption champions Al and Paula became foster carers after adopting two sisters in 1999.

They now have six children, and spend their free time championing adoption and offering advice to couples considering adopting.

Their nominator called them ‘an inspiration’.

The Happy List is primarily made up of individuals nominated by the newspaper’s readers and was founded as an antidote to all the rich lists and celebrity lists.

It celebrates a different set of values, embracing those who start charities, help troubled youngsters, give huge amounts of time to volunteering and raising money, foster children, care for wildlife, and much more.
