Children have been saddling up for French lessons with a twist.

A taste of the Tour de France came to Eastlea Primary School, in Cramlington.

As part of the French curriculum, pupils took part in an afternoon of fun French activities based on the cycle race, culminating in their own unique bike race on the school field where the ‘Lanterne Rouge’ jersey was awarded to the slowest rider.

The afternoon was planned by French specialist Madame Taylor.

Headteacher Emma Beeston said: “We are so lucky to have such a quality French curriculum, and themed workshops are an important part of that. The children enjoyed designing their jerseys and used French ‘encouragements’ to cheer on their classmates in the slow race.”

“We have a very keen group of cyclists, but this was a very different challenge for them.

“Jessica was the overall winner, but everyone taking part earned a jersey. Well done to all.”
