TWO men from Blyth have been arrested after seats were damaged and thrown during a football match at the Stadium of Light.

The 47-year-old and 26-year-old have been charged with criminal damage and throwing missiles at a designated football match, at the Sunderland v Newcastle derby on October 21.

Their arrests follow an incident in the Upper North Stand of the stadium and the pair will appear in court on New Year’s Eve.

Northumbria Police’s Chief Superintendent Steve Neill said: “While the vast majority of fans were well behaved on the day and enjoyed the match, there was some incidents of disorder.

“Since then we have been carrying out extensive enquiries to trace anyone suspected of being involved in any such incidents.

“Following enquiries two people have been arrested and subsequently charged with offences and are going through the court process.”
