AN arson attack on a wooden hide at Ellington nature reserve on Sunday caused £15,000 worth of damage.

The hide at the Cresswell Road site is believed to have been set alight at around 3.25pm.

Police are keen to trace five youths seen nearby at the time.

Inspector Barrie Joisce, of Ashington’s neighbourhood policing team, said: “This appears to have been a mindless act of vandalism which has caused extensive damage and deprived the local community of a valuable facility much loved by the local community.

“I’d urge anyone with any information which could help us identify those involved to contact their local neighbourhood officers.

“This kind of criminal behaviour will not be tolerated, and inquiries will be continuing to bring those responsible to account.”
