Police make arrest after cancer victim assault

A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery after a woman living with terminal cancer had her handbag stolen.

Marilyn Massie, 63, was walking along Chestnut Street in Ashington at around 11pm on Sunday August 25 when she was approached by a young man riding a bike who assaulted her and took her handbag.

She suffered a broken wrist and nose and was taken to Wansbeck Hospital for treatment before being discharged.

Police have been making extensive enquiries onto the robbery and have made an arrest during the course of the investigation.

A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery on September 2 and is currently on police bail.
