Renewed appeal in Morpeth Manslaughter

POLICE have arrested a second man in connection with the death of a man in Morpeth on Tuesday.

Fifty-two-year-old Michael Marshall of Morpeth died in hospital on Tuesday August 23 after being assaulted in the town centre earlier that day.

At 3pm he was shopping in the Sanderson Arcade when he became involved in a verbal altercation with another man.

The argument continued on the street outside, where the victim was assaulted. He was taken to hospital and died at 5.42pm.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Binks, leading the investigation, said: “I would appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and who may have seen the altercation to contact police.”

Police have arrested a 49-year-old on suspicion of manslaughter. He is currently helping with enquiries. A 55-year-old man who had been arrested earlier in the week has been released with no further action.
