NORTHUMBERLAND residents are being urged not to let thieves spoil the rest of the Christmas holidays.

Homes for Northumberland’s safer neighbourhoods team has launched a campaign along with Northumbria Police to advice residents on how to avoid falling foul of criminals, with tenants in Blyth being sent special leaflets.

The advice includs keeping valuables out of view, throwing away wrapping paper, locking windows and doors and to leave a light on when leaving the house.

In addition, to stay safe when out and about, the campaign urges people to tell someone where they are and not walk alone late at night.

Homes for Northumberland’s Colin Blackett said: “The festive season provides an opportunity for some offenders to increase their criminal activity.

“This campaign is designed to offer tenants advice on the simple steps they can take to stay safe.”
