Cullercoats U21s lose seven-goal thriller

Cullercoats U21’s bowed out of this season’s Northumberland U21 Champions League competition after missing out to Heaton Stannington in a goal and action packed match at Cochrane Park.

Cullercoats, the Champuons League winners for the past two seasons, made the early break through on five minutess when striker, Tom Atkinson, pounced onto a cross in the home box and finished into the corner of the net to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

Heaton levelled on 12 minutes when they were awarded a harsh penalty for a foul in the box and they extended their advantage with two further goals on the break before half time to make it 3-1 to the home side.

The game continued to be entertaining after the break and Heaton grabbed a fourth with a tremendous left foot finish on 60 mins.

Cullercoats continued to press and were rewarded when Atkinson added his second of the game with the goal of the game, when he hit

an unstoppable shot from 20 yards into the top corner of the net to reduce the arrears to 4-2.

Cullercoats were then awarded a penalty which was saved by the home keeper, before Atkinson rounded off his hat-trick on 80 mins with another great finish made and scored by the striker who broke through the home defence from the right and hit a low shot into the bottom corner of the net to make it 4-3.

Atkinson had a chance to level the game from the penalty spot on 88 mins, but the home keeper made a second spot kick save to win the game for Heaton, with the final score remaining 4-3.

Atkinson was awarded ‘man of the match’ for Cullercoats for his strong display up front.

Cullercoats, back in league action, entertain Blyth Spartans next Sunday with a 2pm kick off at Links Avenue.
