A CUP from the 1887 Morpeth Olympics has helped remind residents of the area’s Olympic past ahead of the visit from the 2012 Olympic torch.
The small bronze cup was won by Ernst Rutherford at the 1887 Morpeth Olympics and has extra significance as it was the last cup to be awarded to a victorious athlete.
Cash prizes were given out to the winners of Morpeth Olympic events in the years that followed.
The cup is now owned by Ernst Rutherford’s grandson Alan and his wife Irving, of Kings Avenue in Morpeth, who found the cup in their loft after years of searching for it.
