Officers from Northumbria Police's dedicated Cyber Crime Unit are urging gamers to enjoy the new app safely and be aware of the data they are potentially sharing with others. Detective Inspector Angela Hufton explained that while it can be great fun, people just need to be mindful of their personal safety. DI Hufton said: "This is a great game and clearly everyone is enjoying using it. Just make sure you take the same care of your cyber security that you do at home. It is obviously a trend that is sweeping the nation and while we don't want to stifle anyone's fun, we do ask that gamers take care when it comes to sharing information via the app. "Be sure to download the official app and make sure you use different passwords containing a combination of letters, numbers and symbols. Please also be careful not to compromise any personal information. It can be so easy for opportunist cyber criminals to access personal data which could lead to fraud or even allow them to hack your phone with viruses and malware. "Also be vigilant when it comes to identifying your whereabouts through GPS. This could make your home an easy target for burglars. "I would also be aware of your personal safety when out looking for Pokémon. Watch where you are walking, be aware of your surroundings and don't walk out into roads without looking.” For more information about staying safe online, search Northumbria Cyber Safety #staysafe #playsafe.
