CYCLISTS: Please be considerate
Whilst driving along Beresford Road in Seaton Sluice, about 100 yards before The Delaval Arms, the traffic flow was forced to slow down in order to overtake several cyclists.
As we passed I pointed out to the cyclists that there was a perfectly fine cycle lane that they could be using.
One of the cyclists tore in front of us and forced us to a standstill. He began shouting at me that there was no legal requirement for cyclists to use a cycle lane.
I pointed out that they had unnecessarily slowed down the traffic and that cyclists would be the first to complain had pedestrians been blocking a cycle lane.
He continued to repeat his mantra that no law forced them to use a cycle lane and added that there might be broken glass on the cycle path.
I drove off.
Problems can also be found along the Eve Black Walkway.
Although cyclists are permitted on the walkway, there is adequate signage to request that they be considerate and inform them that pedestrians have right of way.
This is clearly not enough as I have encountered some cyclists tearing past people unannounced, without so much as a simple courteous bell ring.
Perhaps a few chicaned rails set at intervals would slow them down.
