A woman from south east Northumberland is holding a ball to raise funds for a charity close to her heart.
Jo Robertson, from Bedlington, has organised the Big Ball of Courage to raise funds for Cancer Research and the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund.
Jo lost her mother Joan Keddy to mesothelioma in 2012 and felt she wanted to do something to help raise money to fund research into a cure for the disease.
“I did what I could for my mum, but due to the nature of her disease, I had to watch her go through chemotherapy and radiotherapy only to extend her life as there is currently no cure for mesothelioma,” she said.
“As a nurse, I was overwhelmed at how my mum maintained her dignity and fought her battle with absolute courage.
“Throughout my career I have embraced and understood the need for research, and have contributed to the research process.
“It is purely her inspiration that has led me to organise the Big Ball of Courage – a tribute to her, but a fundraising event to concentrate on raising money purely for research.
“I firmly believe the battle against cancer can only be won with research into the disease, to advance treatments and cures, for future generations. “
The ball, which will include a drinks reception, four-course dinner and entertainment, will take place on Saturday, June 27, at the Holiday Inn in Seaton Burn. Tickets at £40 are available from Jo on firstname.lastname@example.org
