Dean taking on run in memory of his grandma

A grandson from south east Northumberland is preparing to run a half marathon to raise money in memory of his grandma.

Dean Walker will take on the Great North Run this September in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.

Dean, from Blyth, chose the charity after his grandma Norma Callender, passed away in March, aged 65.

“My grandma unfortunately passed away on March 16 after battling Alzheimers,” said Dean.

“She went from being such a caring woman to struggling with daily life.

“She eventually forgot her closest relatives and friends and to even speak and walk.

“During the her final weeks she then forgot how to swallow which caused numerous infections.

“My grandad stood by her side no matter what, and was a credit to his wife and family for what he had done for her.

“I want to raise awareness of this disease and help raise funds to this charity which are working on early treatment plans and eventually a cure.

“The society also helps the family of the patient, who also need help and support.”
