Demolition of two pubs

A controversial scheme to demolish The Railway Inn and The New Dolphin pub in Newbiggin has been given the green light.

The plans, by Arch, which would see the buildings replaced with a new library, public toilets and eight two-bedroom apartments, were approved by Northumberland County Council’s strategic planning committee despite 129 objections.

A planning report stated that refurbishing the buildings would be economically unviable due to the poor structural condition, while retaining the façades ‘is only marginally viable and is not an ideal conservation option’.

Coun Bernard Pidcock said: “It’s a shame that as time marches on, these things have to happen.”
