A youngster from Blyth has been crowned captain of a competition run by the Build a Boat Scheme.

Eleven-year-old Shay Appleby, who attends Croftway Primary Academy, entered a competition to design the colour scheme for a skiff that is being built by the community and the new Blyth Rowing Club in one of Keel Row shopping centre’s empty units.

Ten-year-old Ellie Shaftoe was runner-up in the competition and will see her lettering idea painted on to Shay’s design.

Shay and Ellie’s hard work will be rewarded when they see the skiff, named Crofton, wheeled out of Keel Row and lowered onto the water for the first time at the Blyth Town Fair on July 19.

Shay said: “I am so pleased to have won the build a boat competition and I am very proud that my designs will be used on the skiff. There was some tough competition and I am very excited to see it.”
