Disability sports awards nods for Northumberland project

Ability 2 Play provides activities for hundreds of people across the county, as part of Active Northumberland’s Disability Inclusion Programme.

The programme has been nominated for three awards – Coach of the Year, Service to Sport and Outstanding Club/Group – in the North East Disability Sports Awards.

The awards, now in their ninth year, recognise the achievements of athletes, coaches, clubs and schools involved in disability sports in the last 12 months.

Coun Val Tyler, the council’s cabinet member for arts, leisure and culture, said: “The dedicated team behind our programme can and do make a huge difference in people’s lives.

“The team don’t need trophies as evidence of the amazing job they do, but to win any would be nice and I wish them every success on the awards night.”

Ronnie Scheu, disability inclusion officer from Active Northumberland, added: “Even in the midst of a difficult financial climate, the Ability 2 Play programme continues to offer over 20 hours a week of term-time activities as well as over 250 hours of holiday programme activities which help to enrich the lives of hundreds of disabled children and adults across Northumberland, as well as offering much-needed respite for their parents and carers.”

The awards ceremony is being held at The Dolphin Centre in Darlington tonight.
