Donna Swan with her Outstanding Community Award.

Donna Swan was presented with an Outstanding Community Award at the AKO Autism Hero Awards in London.

She has helped and supported many autism and special-needs charities over the years – this accolade was for her work setting up Calmer Therapy, a community group that helps and supports children who have additional needs, and their families.

It is based in south-east Northumberland, but covers all of the North East.

Donna was described by the judges as ‘an amazing woman who provides a massive lifeline to families in Northumberland’ and was commended for her volunteering while working three jobs and raising two children on the spectrum.

She said: “I am so honoured and moved to receive this award – to even be a finalist was such an honour.”

Donna was part of a team that raised funds for and awareness of Calmer Therapy at the Newbiggin Boxing Day Dip.
